Often regarded as the cultural hub of New Zealand, Rotorua is home to a diverse multi-cultural population—35 percent of which are Maori—and host to thousands of international visitors every year. Permeated with Maori legend, Rotorua's ancient yet volatile geothermal landscape is world famous. Various tours explore these hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pools, so intrinsically tied with the culture and history of the native Maori people. Such unique experiences are offered at the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Whakarewarewa Thermal Village.Located on the south shore of Lake Rotorua, three hours south of Auckland by car, this vibrant city is also renowned for its spectacular natural scenery. Interspersed among the thermal wonders, numerous lakes, forested river gorges and the imposing Mount Tarawera adorn the Rotorua area. The varied terrain favours world-renowned trout fishing, river rafting, mountain biking and major sporting events such as the annual Cateye Moonride and Rotorua Half Marathon, both held in the Whakarewarewa Forest. After an adventure-filled day, visitors to Rotorua can unwind in therapeutic, mineral-rich water at various hot spring locations, including the famous Hells Gate Thermal Reserve, or over a local brew at the Pig & Whistle Historic Pub.
