With bubbling hot mud pools, exploding geysers, steaming fumeroles and fiery geothermal waters set among a barren landscape, it is no wonder that English playwright George Bernhard Shaw thought it was a gateway to hell; however, for hundreds of years, the Maori tribe Ngati Rangiteaorere revered this land they called Tikitere. Still Maori owned, visitors flock to the site to view the remarkable landscape or to bathe in its spa and mud baths. The mud pools at Tikitere are purported to have medicinal qualities that soothe the body and refreshes the skin. Address: State Highway 30 | Rotorua, North Island Tel: +64 (0) 007 3453151
